RETFORD GROUP
Email: retford.ramblers1@btinternet.com

We are an active group with a relatively large percentage of members participating in our walking programme.  Our members are from a large variety of backgrounds and circumstances with quite a large age span.  We mix together well as a group and often enjoy stimulating discussions on our walks. The walks take place on alternate Sundays throughout the year although in the summer period there are often weekly walks  with occasional evening walks.

The Sunday walks are normally day rambles although in winter, on a few occasions, it is a morning ramble.  The morning rambles are between 4 to 6 miles whilst the day rambles are between 7 to 10 miles with the occasional longer ramble.  The walks take place in Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Lincolnshire and Yorkshire to cater for all tastes.

In addition we organise walking weekends a few times a year and this year’s programme features a walking weekend near Scarborough in late September and a New Year’s Break walking.

We gather on Sunday mornings in the car park on CHAPELGATE, off CANON SQUARE, RETFORD.  Timings depend on the specific walk (see below), but normally commence between 9am and 10am depending on the distance to be travelled and the walk duration.

We run an informal car share system so as to help the environment, aid parking and petrol costs (10p per mile divided by the number of people in the car and sharing car parking fee).
Meeting place for all Sunday walks is the car park on Chapelgate, off Canon Square Retford. For midweek walks please check the Retford Times or contact the Secretary for the starting point.

Please make sure that you are fit enough to undertake the walk you intend to join. If you're unsure of your fitness level, try a short and easy walk first: it's much better to find a walk a little too slow and easy than to make yourself miserable and exhausted.

Most Ramblers' walks are off-road in rural areas. Please have suitable footwear and clothing for the walk you intend to join, and bring some food and drink, even if the walk includes a pub or café break. Leaders may refuse to accept participants who in their opinion are inadequately equipped or unfit. When in doubt, contact the organisers or the walk leader in advance.

For your own and others' safety please read and abide by any advice and guidelines issued by the organisers, and the instructions of the walk leader. Though walking is inherently one of the safest outdoor activities, no activity is completely without risk and it is your responsibility to behave sensibly and to minimise the potential for accidents to occur.

Our programme is a yearly one, and as such some alterations are sometimes unavoidable.

For information on any of the individual walks contact the leader. The Group reserves the right to change walks if circumstances alter. The Group has a collection of local maps, which may be borrowed from the Secretary. Details of the upcoming walk are published in the Retford Times the Thursday prior to the walk and on the Library notice board.
Children are welcome on walks, however those under 16 must be accompanied by a responsible adult.
Non-members are invited to participate in any ramble but will be expected to enrol as members of the Ramblers’ Association after a couple of rambles. Subscription details are available from the Secretary.
Our Group encourages car sharing and walkers often meet at Chapelgate car park. Drivers often appreciate it when a voluntary contribution is made by passengers. As a guide, 15p per mile per person in the car is considered an amount which reasonably covers the costs incurred by the driver. Given the recent large fluctuations in petrol prices we also suggest that, should the price of a litre of petrol exceed £1.05, a figure of 20p per mile would be more reasonable.
At all times follow the country code
